What is the Right Fit?
Covid has changed the way employers and employees look at the job market. The right fit employee of yesteryear may not be the best fit for today’s working environment.
In the last few years, much has changed – from where you work, how you work and who you work with. In this blog post we will discuss how employers and candidates define the right fit.
9 Things Job Seekers are Looking for in the Right Fit Employer
Let’s start with how a candidate describes the right fit. As we speak with job seekers, these trends have emerged that cover what top candidates are seeking.
- Culture – perhaps the biggest factor, culture shows how the company treats their employees. They want to know what the work environment looks like. Is it a big company feel or a family type of feel, is it cold or warm, friendly and inviting? Is it team oriented?
- Reputation – how has the company treated customers during times of supply chain turmoil? Do they still find it easy to do business with you?
- Community involvement – have you taken a leadership role in your community, are you giving back?
- Workplace choice – do you give your team flexibility as to where and how they work? Are employees in the office? Is it a hybrid work model or work your way (your choice)?
- My boss – how do they manage their teams? Have they adopted online meetings and virtual interviews as a norm?
- My teammates – what is the makeup of the workforce – early career rising stars, mid-career producers, or an aging workforce? Who am I surrounded by?
- Advancement – can I grow financially and professionally?
- Leadership – do I have access to the top leaders in the company? Are they visible?
- Benefits – what is the cost of the family plan? When can I get on the insurance plan? When do I qualify for 401k matching?
These are the things we see candidates asking more frequently, remember defining the right fit goes both ways. In today’s recruiting climate, candidates have a say in this. They too are looking for their right fit.
6 Things Employers are Looking for in a Right Fit
Next, we look at what employers are looking for in their right fit candidates. As we speak with clients here are the ways our clients are describing what makes a right fit candidate.
- Personality – does the candidate’s personality fit with the team they will be working with?
- A match in style – does the way they handle and present themselves fit professionally with our expectations?
- Ego – is the candidate’s ego too big? Many companies today knock candidates out of consideration for this reason. Collaborative and team-oriented candidates win the role.
- Gut feeling – we hear this a lot, interviewers can’t point to anything specific, it’s just their gut feeling about the person!
- Assessment scores – the candidate doesn’t align with the scores of the person that had the job prior or what they are looking for in the new candidate.
- Qualifications – we are seeing employers getting very granular. They are looking for specific degrees, advanced degrees, and/or specific product knowledge. Missing some of these specific qualifications could knock someone out of contention. This level of granularity can elongate your search. We recommend defining a wish list and must have list.
Conclusion
It is now critical to sell your brand (both personally and professionally). Just as employers are looking for the right fit, candidates are also being very picky about the company they are considering working for. Being upfront in defining your brand, who you are, and what you stand for is critical in a candidate’s eyes. How you run your interview process and how you communicate is crucial. The right fit is a two-way street, we always hear about fit from the client’s view but fit is also critical to the candidate. Covid has made being the right fit a deciding factor between obtaining, retaining, and losing top talent. It is important that all sides can define what “the right fit” means to them. It isn’t always a gut fit or chemistry fit. Defining these ideas is truly challenging as both candidate and employer seek the same right fit.
