Competition for top talent can be fierce, and you don’t want to let your top choice slip away. However, this happens frequently due to two factors (which can easily be adjusted and improved)! Timing and feedback are critical. Once a candidate is interviewed, timely feedback is paramount in this competitive market. Candidates are genuinely looking for fast responses to their candidacy, and the longer they get strung out, the more restless they get. If you wait too long, the candidate will start to talk to other potential employers.
One of the things we strongly recommend is to have a feedback loop established right away – we recommend within 24 hours. This feedback goes either to your candidate directly or to the candidate via your recruiting team. Although this step seems trivial, it is very important. In today’s market, candidates are evaluating their next employer just as you are looking for your next employee. Recruitment has become a two-way street. Candidates have choices and are sizing up your company just as you’re sizing them up. It becomes critical to provide them feedback because a lack of responsiveness and attention to detail can often turn candidates off. Dragging out the process could cause you to lose a potential candidate simply because you failed to keep in touch. Therefore, we highly recommend a more disciplined evaluation process for candidates, and throughout each step of the interview process, remember that timely feedback is critically important.
Candidates have choices. Don’t have them turn to one of your competitors for a similar job while you’re still making internal decisions. Let the candidate know where they stand in the process and that you’re interested in them.
