Maybe it is time to rethink recruitment as times are changing (and they have been for the last several years).
In our industries, we always hear about the need to get youth interested, but very few companies take action. Wouldn’t it be ideal to plant seeds early on about a profession in distribution? How can this be accomplished?
Perhaps the first step would be to designate your company as a destination of choice for high school, trade school, and recent college grads. Hold regular open houses for students and advertise these off-hour events. Show product demos and company videos, give tours, and hands-on demos. Make it a career day event with press releases. Get the local youth in your building and get them excited about your business! We believe recruitment of early career prospects could be much more than attending a college job fair. And if you only attend job fairs, have formal invites to hand out to prospects to attend your open house with an RSVP.
Another source of talent could be recent retirees. We all know they want to retire, but how many of these folks wish they could work fewer hours and work from home? Maybe this could be a staffing idea to fill time voids and get a little boost from well-known talent at half the expense.
But in the end, the biggest selling point is your culture. Things such as more work-life balance, spot bonuses, additional PTO, quarterly reviews, personal development expenses, and even childcare service reimbursements are all creative ways to spark interest in your company and retain existing talent.
We find candidates always ask about personal growth. What will the company invest in me for personal training, classes, skills enhancements, coaching, and mentoring? What does my career path look like?
Now is the time to be creative and plan for your future workforce. Covid certainly reshaped employee’s visions of how they work, where they work, and what is the most important factors to retaining their talents. Employers are now faced with being competitive, creative, and comforting in order to retain their top employees.
